Affordable High-Performance Sanding Belts for Beginner Bladesmiths

Okay, based on the Reddit discussion, here's a product opportunity analysis:

Identified Need/Problem: The user ("I have a 1/30 harbor freight sander and it does not like to remove material at all") and a commenter ("You will get farther with quality belts on the 1x30 than with cheap belts. I bought like $100 worth of cheap ceramics when I started and I still have a bunch of the belts laying around.") highlight a common issue for beginner/intermediate bladesmiths:

  1. Entry-level sanders (like the popular 1x30 Harbor Freight model) are common due to their low initial cost.
  2. These sanders struggle with material removal when paired with subpar or generic sanding belts.
  3. Bladesmiths recognize that quality belts improve performance, but sourcing them can be confusing, costly, or lead to wasted purchases of ineffective belts.
  4. The hobby "gets expensive fast," making cost-effective solutions highly desirable.

Product Opportunity: A "Performance Upgrade Kit for Entry-Level Bladesmithing Sanders" or more specifically, "High-Performance Sanding Belt Assortment for 1x30 (and other common beginner sander sizes like 2x42) Sanders."

Product Suggestion: Develop and market curated assortments of high-quality, durable sanding belts specifically selected for optimal performance on popular beginner belt sander models (e.g., 1x30, 2x42).

  • Contents: The kit would include a range of grits (e.g., coarse for aggressive stock removal, medium for shaping/bevel grinding, fine for pre-finish) using superior abrasive materials (e.g., quality ceramics, zirconia alumina) known for longevity and cutting efficiency on steel.
  • Differentiation:
    • Targeted: Explicitly marketed for specific beginner sander models (e.g., "The Ultimate 1x30 Bladesmithing Belt Pack").
    • Performance-Tested: Belts are selected and tested to outperform generic or cheap alternatives on these specific machines.
    • Value: Offer better performance-per-dollar than users trying to piece together individual premium belts or wasting money on ineffective cheap belts.
    • Guidance: Could include a small guide on which belt to use for which task, and tips for maximizing belt life on smaller sanders.

Expected Benefits:

  • For the User:
    • Significantly improved material removal rates on their existing entry-level sanders.
    • Reduced time spent grinding and hand-sanding.
    • Achieve better bevels and overall knife geometry.
    • Cost savings by avoiding the trial-and-error of buying ineffective belts.
    • Increased satisfaction and better results, making the hobby more enjoyable and less frustrating.
  • For the Business:
    • Addresses a clearly articulated pain point in a growing hobbyist market.
    • Potential for strong brand loyalty if the belts deliver on performance promises.
    • Repeat purchases as users consume belts and trust the curated selection.
    • Opportunity to expand into other related consumables or beginner-friendly tools/accessories.
    • Relatively low barrier to entry if sourcing quality belts from manufacturers and packaging them.

This product directly solves the problem of inefficient grinding on budget equipment and the financial burden of a hobby that "gets expensive fast" by providing a cost-effective performance upgrade.

Been afraid to post because I see so many more advanced bladesmiths than myself. But this is about my 15th knife I've made. Thoughts?

Thanks man appreciate it. This one I actually made as a small kitchen utility knife. I'll have to post a Skinner in the future.

Don’t be afraid! Posting them is how you receive feedback on how to improve. Doesn’t matter if it’s the worst thing ever made, at least you’re actually doing it.

Take a look on Facebook marketplace or on Craigslist for a used 2x42 sears or craftsman. They will often state 1/2hp but their running hp is less, since that is their peak starting hp. It is

Don’t be too afraid to post, we’re generally pretty chill here and want to encourage all the other makers to keep making! For someone with intermittent access to their shop this isn’t bad at

Looks good but there's not really much of a bevel. Looks like it goes full stock thickness to a convex edge. Could go a lot thinner

Thanks appreciate it. Hopefully I can do so soon this gets expensive fast 😂
