DIY emergency kit for non-destructive opening of interior locked doors

Product Opportunity Analysis:

1. Identified User Need/Problem: The user's situation ("My cat locked herself in here... Tried credit card method, wiggling knife...") and the following comments highlight a common and urgent household problem: being locked out of an interior room, often with a pet or child inside, or due to a faulty or accidentally engaged privacy lock. Existing solutions like calling an expensive locksmith are often seen as overkill or too slow for simple interior doors, and DIY attempts with improper tools (credit cards, knives) can be ineffective or damaging. There's a clear need for an accessible, affordable, and effective self-help solution.

2. Specific, Feasible Product Suggestion: Product Name: "Interior Lockout Rescue Kit" (or "Household Emergency Interior Door Access Kit")

Description: A carefully curated kit containing simple, effective, and non-destructive tools, along with clear instructions, designed to help individuals quickly and safely open common types of locked interior doors without needing specialized skills or resorting to costly locksmith services.

Key Components:

  • Multi-Shim Set: A selection of thin, flexible, yet durable plastic shims (superior to credit cards) of varying stiffness and sizes, designed for bypassing simple latch bolts.
  • Under-Door Latch Manipulator: A thin, sturdy tool (e.g., spring steel or rigid plastic) designed to slide under the door to push or pull interior lever handles or manipulate certain types of latches from the inside. This addresses a common scenario and tool type mentioned in discussions ("door mule," "under-door tool").
  • Privacy Lock Emergency Key Set: A set of small, universal pins/rods suitable for opening interior doors with push-button or turn-button privacy locks that have an external emergency release hole.
  • Miniature Non-Marring Pry Tool/Spudger: A small tool to gently create a gap or assist in manipulating latches without damaging the door or frame.
  • Comprehensive Illustrated Instruction Manual & Online Video Guide: Easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions (with diagrams and QR codes to video demonstrations) for identifying common interior lock types and using each tool effectively and safely. This is a critical component for unskilled users in a stressful situation.
  • Compact Storage Case: To keep all tools organized and readily accessible.

3. Expected Benefit: This "Interior Lockout Rescue Kit" addresses a frequent, urgent, and often stressful household problem by providing a cost-effective, immediate, and empowering solution for simple interior door lockouts. For a fraction of the cost and time of calling a locksmith, users (homeowners, renters, pet owners, parents) can regain access, ensure the safety of those locked inside (pets, children), and avoid potential damage from improper DIY attempts. The kit offers peace of mind and promotes self-sufficiency for minor household emergencies, tapping into a market seeking practical, affordable preparedness tools.

Why do you have a keyed door in the interior of your house?

A panel of 4’x8’ Sheetrock is like $10-12 at the big orange store. Spackle and tape are a few bucks each. Done and dusted for ~$20. Last time I called an emergency locksmith, it was >$150

I know you said card failed, but try a flimsy loyalty card and pound it in so it actually does the little S shape to get through the door jam, it’s your best bet and that truck work more than

The cat will be fine. Terrified but fine. They can dodge snake attacks in fractions of a second. It can dodge a door. Just make noise before to scare it away from the door, just in case
