I think people are really getting hung up on *masculine* and *feminine* as cultural terms meaning “appropriate for a man/woman.”
But the researchers are using these words as scientific terms

Japanese actors used to have more striking defined features. They were "koi", or more strong in atmosphere. Standards have changed considerably.
