Fermented Foods: Beyond Probiotics, New Nutritional Insights Emerge

Published on 08/01/2025Trend Spotting / Early Adopter Signals

This post highlights an evolving understanding of the benefits of fermented foods, moving beyond the commonly known 'live bacteria' (probiotics) to emphasize 'extra nutrients and helpful compounds' created during the fermentation process. This represents a deeper scientific insight within the established health and wellness trend of gut health. For food manufacturers, dietary supplement companies, and nutrition brands, this offers a refined and more comprehensive marketing angle. They can differentiate products by promoting the broader nutritional profile and unique bioactive compounds, potentially appealing to a wider, more health-conscious consumer base seeking synergistic benefits beyond just microbial health.

I'm ignorant about this issue with mdpi. Could you elaborate?
u/vapeschnitzel
I only get farty as hell from kimchi and sauerkraut and even after prolonged exposure don't benefit from it noticeably
u/CombatWombat1973
Wasn’t there a study from China that showed fermented foods cause cancer?
u/iceyed913
So that microwaved kimchi was doing something after all, I knew I wasn't crazy!
u/HolochainCitizen
Could you share about what the problem is with mdpi?
u/razibog
Interesting, I would wager the gas comes from the bowels readjusting the bioflora and it would last until it stabilised, it never did for you? How long was this prolonged exposure?

It’s too much stuff for a Reddit comment, and Wikipedia editors are better at technical communication than me. Reading tuff, huh bud?

MDPI=trash. Simple as really

I get pains from sauerkraut and allergies from yoghurt.. I've had better luck with eating plenty of fiber, and taking a probiotic pill once or twice a week

I ***KNEW*** beer was good for me!

I mean, they have the same compounds that the bacteries fabricate and that we cannot fabricate. That's largely the reason you want to ingest the bacteries, so that they create those compounds

Calling it trash is too simplistic. MDPI publishes a huge volume of research, and some of its journals may have weaker quality control or predatory-like behaviors, especially in special issue

Why not just tell us instead of making us click a link... That seems like bot behavior ngl

Funny my doctors specifically told me to avoid fermented foods like sour dough. Maybe we shouldn’t give out blanket advice.

I gave up about after a month, always stopping until symptoms subsided (1-3 days) and trying to keep dosages low

I read the challenges section. Is there something specific there that you are concerned about? Most publishers have similar issues; that's part of being a large publisher.

high temperatures can kill the good bacteria though... unless you meant making kimchi in microwave quickly - then it's probably not fermented at all, just soft cabbage

True but in a science subreddit should we not have as much discussion *here* It's ok if one cannot elucidate everything but should we not be lovers of science and knowledge practice this?

It's sadder that you can't elaborate on a simple concept. Clearly explaining AND spelling are *tough* for you, pleb

I was pretty sure I'd seen a study that showed consumption of too much fermented food could cause stomach cancer. I'll look it up later and update when I can.
