Guide: Assessing & Finding Repair for Damaged Firearm Threads

Product/Service Opportunity:

A user has severely damaged the threads on a Sig Cross rifle receiver where the barrel indexing pin seats, making the area wider by a few millimeters. This is a critical failure point.

Product Suggestion:

An information resource and curated service directory focusing on:

  1. Damage Assessment Guide for Rifle Receivers: Helping users understand the severity of thread damage (e.g., minor burrs vs. material loss/deformation), implications for safety and function, and when DIY repair is absolutely not an option.
  2. Manufacturer Repair Options & Process: Detailed information on how to approach manufacturers like Sig Sauer for receiver repair or replacement, including estimated costs, turnaround times, and what to expect (e.g., whether the receiver, being the serialized part, can be repaired or needs replacement involving FFL transfer).
  3. Specialized Gunsmithing Services Directory for Advanced Receiver Repair: A vetted list of gunsmiths or machine shops specializing in high-precision rifle receiver repairs, including thread restoration, TIG welding (if applicable and safe for the material/heat treat), or re-machining of critical interfaces. This directory should specify capabilities for specific firearm platforms like the Sig Cross.

Expected Benefit:

This resource empowers firearm owners with critical damage to make safe, informed decisions. It would guide them away from potentially unsafe or ineffective DIY fixes for severe damage, provide realistic expectations for manufacturer repair, and connect them with highly specialized professionals capable of complex receiver repairs. Ultimately, it ensures the firearm's safety, legality (as the receiver is the firearm), and functionality.

Any time! But seriously, if you still have the missing bit, I'd give JB Weld a try. Otherwise, delete this post and tell Sig it was like this when you brought it home. Time to see how boundle

You could probably hit the burrs with a file and then see if it works. Just try not to drop it when it's fully assembled. Sigs like to go off like that 😂 (Yes, I know that's just the 320, do

What is it with the copium regarding barrel life?!? You people are delusional. 6.5 Creedmoor has a short barrel life compared to things like 308. Average is about 2000 round, but on occasio

I mean, when I first saw this I was like, that's not that bad. Only the thread on the notch was damaged, that could easily be repaired. Then I noticed that the notch was not a notch but a c

Have you tried put it in rice?

Is that spot normally notched for a key in the barrel and it just got knicked, or did you just lose a giant chunk of threads?

Jokes aside, that’s what I would do. File off the damaged portion, then use a triangular needle file (or a multi groove thread fixing file) to chase the threads.

Well I got it for 1200 new, I didn’t think that was a bad price. Was there something wrong with the HXT?

I cracked off the threads where my barrel nut goes, the barrel nut surprisingly still threads on, but I don’t know if that’s safe to shoot.

My groupings were definitely opening up, even at 100 yds, I wasn’t shooting as well as I normally do. Plus what I don’t get is why I’m getting questioned about how I shoot when all I’m doing

It’s where the indexing pin would go from the barrel, but it is now wider by a few mm.

Oof. Yeah, contact Sig. Assuming all the other parts are still good, rebuilding a new receiver is the move. I have no idea what they would charge for that, in 12 seconds of googling I haven't
