I made a first run from construction lumber to make sure all the proportions were good.

You can see the grain and that it was cut from a single piece of solid stock.

Not necessarily, he could have glued pieces together with matching grain orientation before cutting out the pattern. If it was a single piece, how wide would it have had to be? 12in+? That's
