Specialized Hand Tool for Notching Metal Without Power Tools
Okay, I've looked into the user's request based on their Reddit post.
Product Opportunity Analysis:
- User Need: The user is looking to create a specific type of notch in metal, as shown in a video (Torbjorn Aman's kindling splitter made with a power hammer and custom fuller). They're asking if this can be done with hand tools, like a "butcher tool and a hammer."
- Problem/Gap: There's a need for precise metal forming without using power equipment. A generic "butcher tool" probably won't give the control and specific shape needed.
- Opportunity: A specialized hand tool designed to create consistent, clean notches in metal when struck by a hammer. This would be perfect for blacksmiths, metalworkers, or hobbyists who prefer hand tools but want results similar to those from power tools for specific tasks.
Specific Product Suggestion:
- Product Name: "Blacksmith's Precision Notching Fuller" (or "Handheld Kindling Splitter Fuller," "Artisan's Notching Tool")
- Description: A purpose-built hand fuller, made from hardened tool steel. It would have a specifically shaped working end (e.g., V-shaped, U-shaped, or a custom profile matching the desired notch for a kindling splitter or similar projects) and a robust striking head designed to be hit with a blacksmith's hammer. It could come with a wooden or integrated steel handle for secure gripping (or be designed to be held with tongs).
- Key Features:
- Hardened and tempered tool steel for durability and edge retention.
- Precisely ground notching profile for consistent results.
- Chamfered and dressed striking head to reduce mushrooming and spalling.
- Optional: Different sizes or profiles available (e.g., for different stock thicknesses or notch depths/shapes).
- Optional: A simple jig or guide could be offered as an accessory to ensure consistent notch placement and depth.
- Key Features:
- Target User: Hobbyist blacksmiths, bladesmiths, metal fabricators, and DIY enthusiasts who work with metal using hand tools and want to create clean, repeatable notches or fullers without a power hammer.
- Expected Benefits for User:
- Achieve Desired Result: Enables the creation of clean, well-defined notches similar to those made with a power hammer and custom fuller, but using only hand tools.
- Precision & Consistency: Offers more control and repeatability than using a generic chisel or an ill-suited tool like a "butcher tool."
- Efficiency: Faster and more accurate than trying to file or grind such a notch by hand after making an initial cut.
- Cost-Effective: Provides professional-level capability at a fraction of the cost of power equipment.
- Versatility: While inspired by the kindling splitter, this tool could be used for various decorative or functional notching tasks in metalworking.
Anticipated Market Reception/Benefits for Seller:
- Niche Market: Targets a dedicated community of blacksmiths and metalworkers who appreciate specialized hand tools.
- Solves a Real Problem: Directly addresses a common challenge for those without power hammers.
- Potential for Variants: Could expand into a line of specialized hand fullers for different shapes and applications.
- Content Marketing Opportunity: Demonstrations of the tool in use (e.g., making a kindling splitter) would be highly effective marketing.
This product directly answers the user's need for a better hand tool solution to achieve a specific metal forming task.

Maybe some of you have seen Torbjorn Aman make this kindling splitter with a power hammer and some sort of custom fuller. Would I be able to get this result by hand with a butcher tool and an

He’s an excellent blacksmith. Of course it’s a very good looking tool. Much safer than holding the wood in your hand and use a hatchet to split it.

So simple, thank you. I was thinking too deeply about it I guess lol

Absolutely you can. Buy a friend a 6pack to swing a sledge for a few hours and you'll be set

You could, especially with a large butcher.
Or you could use a hammer then a flattener.

I would do it using half-faced blows over the edge of my anvil.

This is the way. I’ve done this without the help of a powerhammer and it worked fine. Bit more work of course but absolutely manageable without special tools. Just use the edge of your anvil
