Speculative GOOG Trade: Betting on Apple WWDC AI News to Benefit Google

Investment Analysis & Recommendation Summary:

Monitored Assets: Google (GOOG), Apple (AAPL)

Sentiment & Discussion Volume:

  • Google (GOOG): The original poster is bullish, expecting a positive catalyst from Apple's WWDC. The discussion is moderate, with arguments focusing on Google's AI strength and its existing partnership with Apple, as well as some counterpoints.
  • Apple (AAPL): Apple is seen as the main catalyst. Sentiment about Apple's direct benefit is mixed, with debates on its potential AI partners and strategy.

Investment Thesis (Derived from User Discussion): The core idea is to speculate on Google (GOOG) stock or options based on the anticipation of significant AI-related announcements at Apple's ($AAPL) Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9th. The thesis suggests that these announcements could involve an Apple-Google AI partnership or Apple leveraging Google's AI technologies, which could boost GOOG's stock price.

Key Discussion Points & Rationale:

  • Catalyst: Apple's WWDC on June 9th is the central event driving this speculation.
  • Pro-GOOG Arguments:
    • Google's advanced AI capabilities and extensive data resources make it an attractive partner.
    • The existing financial relationship, where Google pays Apple billions annually for default search engine status, sets a precedent for collaboration.
  • Counterarguments & Risks Highlighted by Commenters:
    • Apple might choose alternative AI partners like Anthropic or Perplexity, or deepen ties with Microsoft/OpenAI.
    • A significant reliance on Google could be seen as a negative for Apple's brand, especially given its stance on user data privacy.
    • The historical competitive dynamic between Apple and Google.
    • The trade's success depends heavily on the specific nature of WWDC announcements and the market's reaction.

Proposed Investment Plan (Based on User & Commenter Suggestions):

  1. Direct Equity: Purchase Google (GOOG) stock ahead of the WWDC event.
  2. Options Strategy: A specific options structure was suggested to capitalize on this event with a defined risk/reward profile, potentially for a net credit:
    • Buy: GOOG June 13th (or closest expiry after WWDC, e.g., June 14th weekly) $172 Call.
    • Sell: GOOG July monthly $190 Call.
    • Sell: GOOG July monthly $172 Put.
    • Rationale for Options: This complex strategy aims to profit from a short-term spike in GOOG's price post-WWDC via the long call. The sold July call caps upside but generates premium, while the sold July put also generates premium but carries an obligation to buy GOOG at $172 if the price drops below that by July. The goal is to get $200 credit to see how it goes. If flat, exit.

Overall Assessment: This is a highly speculative, event-driven trade. The outcome is binary and heavily dependent on the news flow from Apple's WWDC and the market's reaction.

  • If Apple announces a significant AI partnership with Google or news favorable to Google's AI role: GOOG stock could see a positive reaction.
  • If WWDC news is underwhelming for Google, involves other partners, or is interpreted negatively: GOOG stock may not benefit or could even decline.

Recommendation (as per the nature of the analyzed discussion): Investors considering this strategy should be aware of its speculative nature and the high degree of uncertainty tied to the WWDC event. The options strategy described is complex and generally more suitable for experienced traders who understand the risks involved, including potential assignment on the short put. Active management, as suggested by "if flat exit," may be required post-event. This is not a long-term investment thesis but a short-term tactical trade based on a specific catalyst.

I thought GOOG and AAPL were bitter mobile enemies cold war style? Hell AAPL partnered up with freaken MSFT and their OpenAI first for their initial AI needs because those 2 companies no long

If I have a nickel everytime someone tells me google is undervalued at 17times pe.

I don't disagree, but given the ties between Microsoft and OpenAI I don't think a partnership between Apple and ChatGPT is going to happen.

They’ll either go to Anthropic or Perplexity
u/BagelsRTheHoleTruth
I dunno, Google's AI is very very good, and arguably has the best access to data, and the best resources to scale compute. It would probably make a lot of sense for Apple to partner with them
u/techyderm
And yet, it’s Apple who has more data privacy issues than Google, lol

A stock can stay undervalued longer than you think. I'd choose put ratio spreads to capitalize on Google's high IVR.

IIRC Google has started rolling out enterprise "zero retention" of data for Gemini similarly to how OpenAI has ZDR. So something can definitely be worked out there.

Bro apple could announce they’re outsourcing everything but their hardware design to Google and millions of fintwit and Reddit bots would proclaim in unison that it would be a headwind for Go

I heard both numbers. I think free, paid and partially subsidized rides have hit 1 million rides. Both numbers are impressive. Yes YouTube is another google monster, than they’re leading the

Apple already has a partnership with OpenAI for Apple Intelligence.

Whoah, are you saying that the public has ridden a FULLY autonomous vehicle over 250,000 times? No driver in the car?
u/imdaviddunn
I thought they hit 10M rides? Is that unpaid? Also YouTube has higher viewership than all cable combined now. Unreal that this isn’t given any credit yet Netflix is. If they add YouTube

Something like $20 billion plus...per year. It's a major sticking point in the antitrust stuff.

Dude, do some more research. Apple is already working on integrating Gemini. Their approach is to give users the flexibility to use either OpenAi or Gemini. Stock may go up but not because of

Google search has been the default on Safari for years, they pay a premium for it. They will work together if it's profitable for both of them. Business is not a zero-sum game

Apple has always positioned itself as respecting your data. Sending it off to Google is a complete 180.

Gemini has gotten better but it’s still not as good as ChatGPT in my experience
u/ZenPawz
Jesus Christ how is Google not a buy. I haven't even heard ANYBODY talk about this. They're all enamored with Elon Musk, but this is the REAL DEAL. Incredible.
u/catchyphrase
Buy 13th $172 call. Sell July monthly $190 call and $172 put. Get $200 credit to see how it goes. If flat exit. I don’t see Apple going to Google when the only thing that makes sense is to

What in excited about is the insane growth of Waymo. In the markets that they operating they are beating or close to beating uber. Hit the milestone of over 250,000 paid rides. They’re way ah

No, it's the other way around. Google pays Apple billions a year to make Google the default search engine.

Apple pays google huge amounts of money to make Google the default search engine. The whole privacy / enemies stuff is just Apple making sure to suck you dry of your money

Stacking GOOG before WWDC? Betting on the silent giant to make some noise

Why would they go to perplexity? They're just a fancy AI wrapper who's trying to become but not foundational model, to my knowledge, yet.

I think there is a very good chance this could happen. Google would revenue share and it would be good for both companies.

It takes about a fortnight to get used to it and fully set up. I had the same experience but I had a couple friends push me to continue and it worked really well after a bit of use. It's not
