Universal Hardware CRT Filter for Modern Displays for Retro Gaming
Comments on the Nintendo Switch Online article reveal a strong and specific desire among retro gaming enthusiasts for significantly improved visual authenticity, particularly a "proper state-of-the-art CRT filter." Users explicitly mention the high standards set by community experts (e.g., "the one made by testufo guy" - likely Mark Rejhon of Blur Busters) and express disappointment with Nintendo's current offerings, deeming them inferior to fan-made emulation solutions. This indicates a clear market gap for a high-quality, user-friendly solution.
Product Opportunity: Premium External CRT Emulation Device
-
Product Proposal: The "PixelPerfect CRT Engine" – an external HDMI video processing unit.
- Functionality: This device would sit between any HDMI-output retro gaming source (e.g., Nintendo Switch, retro consoles with HDMI mods, mini consoles, PCs running emulators, MiSTer FPGA) and a modern HD/4K display.
- Core Feature: Its primary function is to apply exceptionally high-fidelity, real-time CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) display emulation. This would include:
- Advanced, customizable scanline generation (variable thickness, intensity, dynamic behavior).
- Accurate simulation of various phosphor masks (aperture grille, slot mask, shadow mask).
- Realistic phosphor persistence, glow, and halation effects.
- Optional screen curvature and overscan simulation.
- Color gamut and temperature adjustments to mimic specific vintage CRT models.
- Multiple presets based on iconic CRT monitors (e.g., Sony PVM, arcade monitors, consumer Trinitrons) alongside deep customization options for advanced users.
- Key Differentiators:
- Uncompromising Quality: Focus on achieving "state-of-the-art" emulation accuracy, potentially leveraging or inspired by leading research in CRT simulation.
- Ease of Use: Plug-and-play operation with an intuitive on-screen display for configuration, accessible via physical buttons on the device or a simple remote.
- Broad Compatibility: Works with a wide array of HDMI sources, providing a universal solution.
- Low Latency: Engineered for minimal processing delay to ensure a responsive gaming experience.
-
Target Audience:
- Retro gaming enthusiasts playing on original hardware (with HDMI adapters/mods).
- Users of modern consoles with retro game libraries (like Nintendo Switch Online subscribers).
- Owners of dedicated emulation boxes or FPGAs (e.g., Raspberry Pi, MiSTer).
- Gamers who desire authentic retro visuals on modern displays without the complexity of PC-based shader configuration or the limitations of built-in console filters.
-
Expected Benefits:
- Enhanced Visual Authenticity: Delivers a far more genuine and immersive retro gaming experience on modern flat-panel displays, closely mimicking the look and feel of playing on an actual CRT.
- Superior Quality: Offers a significant upgrade over basic or poorly implemented CRT filters found in many official rereleases or emulators.
- Plug-and-Play Simplicity: Provides a hassle-free way to achieve high-end CRT effects across multiple platforms without needing to configure software shaders on each device.
- Customization and Control: Allows users to fine-tune the visual output to their exact preferences or to accurately replicate specific vintage displays.
- Addresses Specific User Demand: Directly fulfills the expressed need for "proper state-of-the-art" CRT filters highlighted in user discussions.

Nintendo Switch Online N64 games are getting Rewind — but only on Switch 2 | Original Switch owners get customizable controls, but not even a CRT filter.

It's not marketing related at all. It's just hardware limitations of the Switch 1.

You need a pretty decent PC to run the Royale CRT shaders in retro arch. But wow. I never thought I’d see such an accurate filter. If Nintendos is anything like that I definitely understand

Storing gameplay at all times to be able to rewind in an N64 game requires better hardware than a SNES game.
